After months hard work from local people and stakeholders, the Village Plan for Parkgate was launched on 20 September 2011. The Village Plan was prepared in consultation with local residents and identifies a range of potential projects to improve the village, from short term goals to long term aspirations.
The plan has been prepared as part of the Village Renewal Measure of the Rural Development Programme 2007-2013. The overarching aim of Village Renewal is to support villages in the rural South Antrim area by enhancing the role of the village as a centre of excellence and sustainable community service provision.
Following a consultation process with residents, youths, businesses and elected representatives, all issues raised were incorporated into a Consultation Report which informed the Village Plan. The Village Plan recommends a wide variety of projects including some short term actions such as environmental improvements and a clean-up to enhance the aesthetics of the village, a community notice board and a newsletter to keep residents informed, and working with DRD Roads Service to address speeding and parking issues in the village.
Briege Coyle, Antrim Borough Council’s Village Renewal Facilitator, explains “the newly formed Parkgate & District Community Association is currently working on implementing some of the actions within the village plan. The group are preparing an application form to seek funding for an environmental improvement scheme to include planting of trees, seating and a community notice board”.
