Members Allowances and Expenses |
To demonstrate its commitment to accountability and transparency, Antrim Borough Council is publishing its Elected Members allowances and expenses.
Councillors do not receive a salary but receive an annual basic allowance of £9738 to enable them to undertake their duties.
Expenses
Councillors are legally entitled to claim certain expenses such as travel while on Council business and the cost of telephone line rental and broadband connection. Councillors meet the costs of telephone calls.
Special Responsibility Allowance
Some Councillors undertake special responsibilities, such as Mayor, Deputy Mayor or Committee Chair. For this duty, they are also entitled to receive a special responsibility allowance which recognises that they will spend more time on Council business.
Dependents' carer's allowance
This allowance assists members by contributing £6.08 per hour, up to a monthly maximum of £316, towards the cost of employing another person to undertake their caring responsibilities while they attend meetings.
Antrim District Policing Partnership Allowance
Council Members who represent the Council on the Antrim District Policing Partnership (DPP) receive an annual additional allowance of £2520 with the Chair receiving £5040 per annum.
Councillors’ Role
In their role as Elected Representatives, Councillors undertake a wide range of duties including:
- Being accessible and available to all residents in their electoral area at all times
- Meeting with constituents
- Preparing for and attending formal and informal meetings as public representatives
- Attendance at Planning Clinics
- Representing the interests of the whole council area
- Representing Council on a wide range of external bodies
