Smoke Free Antrim

It is now against the law to smoke in most enclosed or substantially enclosed public places, workplaces and work vehicles throughout Northern Ireland.

Smoking is the biggest single cause of preventable premature death in Northern Ireland, claiming many lives each year. Second hand smoke is breathing in other people's tobacco smoke.

The intention of the new law is to protect public health and prevent conditions such as heart disease, stroke, asthma and lung cancer, which can be caused by second-hand smoke.

The legislation, which is enforced by Environmental Health Staff in Councils, makes it an offence for a person to smoke in a smoke free place or vehicle. There is also a duty on the owners or managers of smoke free places to ensure that people do not smoke there.

Environmental Health Staff have a role in ensuring that businesses and individuals have the information and advice they need to comply with the law. If you require advice or assistance to prepare your business for the new legislation, please contact the Environmental Health on 9446 3113.
