Unfortunately we live in a divided society. The purpose and function of the Antrim Community Safety Committee is to address both the effects of this division through a partnership approach. It is not concerned merely with addressing the issues raised by sectarian division but all issues related to personal and community safety. This is a vast undertaking and will not be achieved by any quick fix.
Antrim Community Safety Committee is made up of representatives from both the voluntary and statutory sectors including 5 Councillors (nominated by Council), and 5 Community Representatives (elected by public nomination). In addition, representatives are present from PSNI, NIHE, Antrim Towns Development Company, NEELB and the Probation Board for Northern Ireland. The first major project undertaken by the ACSC was a borough wide audit on the perceptions of safety in the communities. It highlighted the following areas:
- Violent and Sexual attack against the person.
- Town Centre Crime
- Domestic Violence
- Substance Abuse
- Criminal Damage and Burglary
- Intimidation
- Anti-Social Behavior
The projects that have been undertaken include the establishment of Antrim Youth Information Centre as a response to youth Drug Education, a campaign to stop attacks on emergency and public transport, a Conference on Intimidation, Development of a Mediation Panel, Internet Safety and the Four Tier security system. We welcome all genuine assistance from any group or individual and will continue to examine all our structures to make them more inclusive and transparent.
