Environmental Events & Initiatives If you would like further information on any of the events or initiatives below, please contact our Environmental Education and Awareness Officer, Danielle McCormick, T. 9446 3113 ext. 1386 Compost Awareness week An annual event held nationwide aimed at raising awareness of home composting and encouraging everyone to give it a go for themselves. A range of initiatives and competitions are run within the Borough to encourage everyone to get involved. Fairtrade Fortnight (last week in Feb, first week in March) Antrim Borough Council run events for residents and businesses each year during the Fairtrade Fortnight campaign. During 2008 Council held an event in Antrim Forum featuring a Fairtrade cookery demonstration provided by celebrity chef, Jenny Bristow, and a Fairtrade market hosting a range of local and global produce. World Fairtrade Day Saturday 10 May 2008 (second Saturday in May), details to follow Alupro Campaign This is an initiative aimed at encouraging residents to recycle even more of their aluminium through their household recycling service, household recycling centres and local bring banks. The initiative is run by Antrim Borough Council in partnership with Alupro and will take place until March 2009. For every tonne of aluminium collected within the Borough, Alupro will donate one fruit tree to Malawai to encourage local sustainability and boost economy within these communities. Cash for Clobber A reuse scheme run through Cookstown Textile Recyclers usually aimed at local schools. For every bag of unwanted clothes collected a cash donation is offered. This initiative can be taken up by schools or community groups at any time of the year. For further information contact Billy Conway at Cookstown Textile Recyclers T. 9447 8880 Environmental Youth Speak Now a Northern Ireland wide environmental speak competition. Each year, the competition is launched at a local level to primary and secondary schools, usually around March or April. A topic is pre-selected on a waste related issue and pupils have between 3 and 5 minutes to convey their views on the issue through a verbal presentation. Winners are selected from an arc21, SWAMP and NWRWMP final with the winners competing for the Northern Ireland Grand Final. Yellow Woods Challenge A competition offered to all schools within the Borough from November to January.approximately, for the collection of old Yellow Pages. Cash prizes are offered to the top three schools.
