Fairtrade Fortnight 2010 : Involving the Community |
The Antrim Borough Fairtrade Community Committee decided to make Fairtrade Fortnight 2010 more of a community driven event this year, hosting a wide number of community based initiatives rather than just offering the one major event.
The ever popular Fairtrade Markets went on tour this year setting up shop in the Antrim Hospital, Antrim Civic Centre and local shopping outlet, Juntion One, and as always proved a huge sucess with staff and visitors alike.
Schools developed their own initiatives to mark the event with Antrim Primary hosting school assemblies, a Fairtrade tuck shop and notice board displays as well as inviting speakers, and having class quizes.
Crumlin Primary also participated with a Fairtrade tea and coffee stall at the school open night, a Fairtrade product tasting day and making Fairtrade smoothies to name but a few of their activities.
Local cafes and restaurants also came onboard with local eatery, Moe's Grill serving up a Fairtrade menu to mark the ocassion. The restaurant will continue to offer a Fairtrade option on an ongoing basis.
The Forum Eatery, Loughshore Cafe, the Bijou Cafe at the Courthouse and Cafe 4 U are just a few additional local eateries that offered a Fairtrade option to the public on an ongoing basis too.
Finally, an invitation was provided to all Churches within the Borough asking them to join in a Sunday Sermon initiative, with five Churches holding events.
The Fairtrade Community Committee had an excellent response from all sectors of the community during their 2010 campaign and was a testament to the popularity and support that the Borough have achieved throughout their ongoing drive to obtaining Fairtrade Borough status.
