Active Communities Launched at Antrim Forum

The launch of the Active Communities Programme took place at the Antrim Forum on Thursday 26th August 2010.

The launch saw children from Antrim and Newtownabbey Summer schemes take part in a activity taster session delivered the Active Communities team and saw a group of residents take part in an aerobics demonstration led by Lisa Patterson, the physical activity leader for older people.

Speaking at the launch, Mayor of Antrim, Councillor Pam Lewis commented, "I am delighted that this programme is being introduced as it will offer a fantastic opportunity for those who don't normally have the chance to be active. Regular exercise contributes so much to our physical and mental well-being.  It can help prevent disease, improve stamina, strengthen and tone, control weight and generally improve quality of life. Regardless of age, ability or fitness level, Active Communities will have something to offer everyone and I would like to thank Sport NI for making the funding available to support such a great project."

Alderman Paula Bradley, Mayor of Newtownabbey commented, "I am very excited about the opportunities that the Active Communities Programme can offer throughout the Antrim / Newtownabbey Consortium. I’m sure that I speak for both Councils in saying that we value the contribution that the Active Communities Programme will make as part of the ongoing commitment to improving physical activity provision for all of the local community across Antrim and Newtownabbey."

Sport Northern Ireland Board Member, Brian McCargo commented “As the lead agency for developing sport in Northern Ireland, Sport Northern Ireland is committed to providing opportunities for people to participate in sport. Quality, accessible coaching is essential in encouraging people of all ages and abilities to engage with and take part in regular physical activity and sport within their communities.

For more information on the Active Communities Programme please contact Development Manager, Janine Harvey T. 028 94463113 ext 2148.
