TOOMEBRIDGE LAUNCHES HIGHWAY TO HEALTH ROUTE

Tuesday, 06 May 2008

Toomebridge has got a new attraction, one which will let you enjoy some gorgeous scenery while at the same time keeping you fit and healthy. Intrigued? Then read on.

In a joint initiative Antrim Borough Council and TIDAL have launched a new Highway to Health route which takes in Toomebridge town and the surrounding area. Representatives from various community, health and local organisations attended the launch which took place last Wednesday (30th April) and enjoyed a leisurely walk along the route, where everyone could take in the best bits of Toomebridge.

Speaking at the launch Ashley Whittley, Active Lifestyles Officer with Antrim Borough Council commented,"I am delighted see the launch of this latest Antrim Borough Highway to Health walking route. Highway to Health is a simple and innovative scheme which aims to encourage people of all ages to walk for leisure and good mental and physical health."

Ashley continued, "This circular route can be walked in under 30 minutes and is 3.02km (1.88 miles) in length. Each kilometre is signposted by attractive pole signs along the way and the route can be walked in either direction. A map board is based at the start of the route at Main Street, Toomebridge with leaflets detailing the walk available at Toome House.

Ashley concludes, ""This Highway to Health Scheme in Toomebridge reinforces the message that regular moderate physical activity, such as walking, can improve symptoms of depression, anxiety and panic attacks and has a positive effect on an individual's whole body, emotional well-being, self-esteem and energy levels."

Ronan Johnston, Development Officer with TIDAL is delighted with the new route. He says, "Walking is the simplest, safest and most effective form of physical activity. I look forward to welcoming walkers to Toomebridge to try out this new route for themselves."
