If you would like to try out a new activity, then why not come along to Fit and Active, the popular over 50s activity programme held in Antrim Forum every Monday and Thursday morning. Ashley Whittley, Active Lifestyles Officer explains, "Nordic Walking is a new form of physical activity to Northern Ireland which originated from summer training for cross-country skiers. Using walking poles, Nordic Walking works your upper and lower body at the same time, strengthening your back, legs and arms, and reducing neck and shoulder tension. This activity is recommended for the more active and fit members of the public as the use of poles allow each participant to walk 20%-40% faster. For those who enjoy a more sedate pace, a series of gentle walks will also be available. These walks will take in the surrounding beauty of Antrim Castle Gardens, Antrim Lough Shore and Rea's Wood." Ashley would also like to draw attention to some class changes. She says, "Anyone who attends Fit and Active classes regularly should note that the programme is changing. Two activities will be on offer from Monday mornings. Each Monday 12 May until 30 June, Nordic Walking sessions and Gentle Walking will be offered. Starting from Thursday 8 May until Thursday 26 June, classes will be changing to Yoga. To accommodate large numbers this class will be split into two with places still available on the 11.15am class." Ashley continues, "If anyone is interested in any of these activities, particularly the Nordic Walking and Yoga, I would ask them to contact me on 9446 3113 ext. 1401to reserve a place. These activities are always popular and numbers are limited."
