Over 10,000 people lined the streets of the Borough last Thursday (7 June), to welcome the Olympic torch as it continued its journey around Northern Ireland.
The torch travelled through Templepatrick before making its first stop at Market Square where it was greeted with loud cheers. From here, it was carried by television personality, Zoe Salmon, to its next destination at Antrim Forum before completing a lap of Antrim stadium. It finished its time in Antrim at the Lough Shore Park where it travelled across Lough Neagh by boat to Ballyronan.
Speaking at the Torch run Mayor of Antrim, Councillor Paul Michael said, “It is an honour and a privilege to have witnessed this once in a lifetime opportunity and one which our local torch bearers, Eorann and Gemma, will never forget. The welcome the Torch and Torch bearers received in Templepatrick and Antrim was tremendous and the atmosphere was electric.”
The Mayor continued, “This is just the start of a three month Olympic journey for Antrim, as we begin to welcome the six countries who will be using the Borough as training camps. I’m sure the teams from Ireland, Kuwait, Sudan, Egypt, Qatar and Jordan will all receive a big Antrim welcome.”
